Fitness instructor Skills & interests

What are appropriate fitness instructor skills and interests? It's an important point if you are looking to begin a career in this industry, because it can be a competitive field, so this may be something that helps to set you apart from other candidates.

Prospective fitness instructor skills and interest would obviously be centered around sports and exercise. Possibilities might include:

  • Regular membership of a gym
  • Competitive sports background
  • Volunteer work with sports teams or groups
  • Life guarding experience
In addition, there are certain aptitudes that would make this a good career for you. These would include:
  • Good communication skills
  • Friendly and outgoing personality
  • Ability to motivate and inspire people to achieve their goals
  • Knowledge of good nutrition and healthy eating
Not having this type of experience doesn't stop you from working as a trainer, the key requirements are:
  • You must be over 18
  • You must hold a current first aid and CPR certificate
  • You must obtain a level 2 REPs qualification
